The health and safety of youth in Northern Virginia is under threat.

In the 2023 Virginia Health Survey, 13.2% of students reported that they did not go to school because they felt unsafe, and 17% of Virginia high school students reported bullying on school property. Suicide has tragically become the 2nd leading cause of death among children aged 10-14. These alarming trends not only affect the well-being of our youth but also impact their ability to thrive academically and enter the workforce, ultimately influencing their economic mobility and the region’s future prosperity.

On March 25, 2025, our Shape of the Region Conference will explore how our community can create safer physical and emotional spaces for youth, address anti-bullying efforts, support substance abuse prevention, and improve access to mental health resources. We’ll examine how these efforts directly influence the ability of Northern Virginia's youth to succeed in school, gain skills for the workforce, and secure pathways to social and economic mobility. A panel of state and national experts will guide a discussion on policy, equity, and innovative solutions that can prepare our youth to contribute to the region's vitality and ensure Northern Virginia is a place they choose to call home into adulthood.
