The Barbara Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established: February 22, 2021
A lifelong learner, a loving teacher, and a forty-two year veteran in the English Department at Stonewall Jackson High School (now Unity Reed), Barb Cornwell made a difference in so many lives of young people. Born in Manassas, Barb yearned to stay in her home state for her college career. She graduated from Osbourn High School in Manassas in 1966 and then attended James Madison University, where she received her degree in English in 1970. She went on to get her Masters of Education from George Mason University. Barb taught public school at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas from 1970 until 2012. She loved working at the school and never sought to teach elsewhere.During her years of teaching at Stonewall Jackson, Barb was a student government advisor, a mentor to student and novice teachers, and instrumental in launching the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at the high school. Barb was a class sponsor for many years, and she at one time or another worked with grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. (Grade 12 was a favorite of hers, and graduation night was always special since she often had taught some of the graduating students as freshman as well as seniors.) Beyond the building, Barb was a presenter at reading conferences in Virginia and New York.
Barb Cornwell passed away on March 1, 2021, after a short illness. In loving memory of this motivating and dedicated educator, The Barbara Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund has been created to support seniors at Unity Reed High School in Manassas, Virginia. Barb would have wanted to support seniors in seeking an education beyond high school and pursuing a successful career. Barb believed no student should be deprived of an education due to lack of funds.
