Flexible, Responsive Funds for Northern Virginia
The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia strives to build a community that works for everyone. We use a
data-driven approach to understand the greatest needs of the region and manage competitive and transparent grants and scholarship processes that bolster our community.
In 2023, we awarded more than $7.0 million in grants and scholarships, including $1,038,812 in grants from
discretionary funds and from
donor advised funds that the Community Foundation directly brokered to help advance equity in Northern Virginia.

Grant Cycles
The Community Foundation runs community grant cycles that support schools and nonprofits in Northern Virginia in a variety of areas guided by research. These include child and youth development, safety net support, mental health, aging, military personnel, disabilities, education, the arts, the environment, Latino engagement and achievement and innovation.

Scholarship Opportunities
The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia manages 35 scholarship funds that support Northern Virginia students pursuing undergraduate degrees. Annually, the Community Foundation awards more than $500,000 to 150+ high school graduates and current college students.

Grant Application Portal
Nonprofit organizations can use the Community Foundation’s Grant Application Portal to apply, update or submit grant applications and final reports for past grants from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. Volunteers reviewing grants can use this portal to access and review assigned grant applications.
