Fairfax, VA (November 13, 2024) – The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia joins a nationwide celebration, Community Foundation Week, November 12-18, 2024, to recognize the increasingly important role that community foundations play in strengthening localities.
Community foundations are independent, public entities that steward philanthropic resources from institutional and individual donors to local nonprofits and represent one of the fastest-growing forms of philanthropy. In 2024 the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia celebrated awarding grants totaling over $800,000 to nonprofits and supplying over $500,000 in scholarships to deserving students. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia announced in October that the Foundation awarded over $100 million to nonprofits since its founding in 1978.
“The Community Foundation works every day to build a Northern Virginia that works for everyone. We partner with leaders across all sectors and connect people to causes they care about. Our deep knowledge of critical community needs allows us to make informed decisions on where funding is needed most.” – Renée Byng Yancey, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia.
Community Foundation Week was created in 1989 by former president George H.W. Bush to recognize the work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative approach to working with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to address community problems.
