New Computer Immersion Schools in Loudoun County

Funds from Chin Family Charitable Fund Provide Support

The Loudoun County Public School System recently announced that three schools will serve as computer science immersion schools – Meadowland Elementary, Moorefield Station Elementary and Round Hill Elementary. Each school will each teach 30 minutes of coding activities to students each day.

Seventh annual “Health Kids Grants” Cycle supports nine schools in Northern Virginia

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awarded $17,700 in Healthy Kids Grants to address the main causes of childhood obesity by supporting programs that increase physical activity and/or improve nutrition in Northern Virginia public schools. The 2017-2018 school year is the seventh annual Healthy Kids grants cycle, with a total of $118,000 awarded to date.

Capital Area Food Bank

Funds will establish three new Family Market Programs in Alexandria, Virginia

The J.O.Y. Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia made a $96,000 grant to fund three new Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) Family Market Programs for the 2017-2018 school year. The funds will help establish new Family Markets at three elementary schools in Alexandria, Virginia: Brynn Mar Park Elementary School, Hybla Valley Elementary School, and Weyanoke Elementary School.

2017 Scholarships

Students Honored at Event

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has awarded scholarships to 89 students, totaling $304,700, to support their continuing higher education beginning in the fall. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia manages and administers the funds for twenty-five scholarships that support Northern Virginia students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Grant for George Mason University Center Honey Bee Initiative

Grant supports partnership to develop innovative, multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial approaches to honey bee sustainability

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia recently made a grant of $25,000 to the George Mason University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Honey Bee Initiative. The goal of the grant is to accelerate the program and work of leveraging George Mason University innovators, educators, student teams and community partners to address the critical issues facing the honey bee.

The event was focused on, “Community Wealth Building – A New, Inclusive Systems Approach to Economic Development,” and featured speakers Ted Howard, President and Co-Founder, The Democracy Collaborative, and Yanique Redwood, President and CEO, Consumer Health Foundation. The goal of Community Wealth Building is to create inclusive, sustainable, and equitable models of economic success.
